Patterns of sedentary time accumulation according to age in the United States: A 2003-2006 NHANES analysis

Résumé

Several analyses of accelerometer data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) have been published to propose estimates of physical activity and sedentary behavior in the US non-institutionalized population. However, very few studies have attempted to use NHANES data to characterize the patterns of accumulation of sedentary time, in particular across the age spectrum. The aim of the present work was to propose a reproducible analytical pipeline of 2003-2006 NHANES data to generate a dataset containing a wide range of activity metrics including those relating to sedentary time accumulation, and then to estimate the quantiles of sedentary time accumulation metrics (mean daily sedentary minutes, mean daily sedentary breaks, median bout duration, usual bout duration, power-law exponent alpha, and Gini index) for several age categories: children (6 – 12 yr), adolescents (13– 17 yr), adults (18 – 64 yr), and older adults (≥ 65 yr). Any 60-s accelerometer epoch with less than 100 counts (vertical axis) was used to detect a sedentary bout. Quantile estimates were obtained using participant sampling weights adjusted for the 2003-2006 period. All the code and results are available in a GitHub repository (https://github.com/pydemull/activAnalyzer.nhanes). When considering the median estimates, the main results show, as age increases, an upward trend in mean daily sedentary minutes, a downward trend in power-law exponent alpha, and an upward trend in usual bout duration and Gini index. These results suggest that, as age increases, US non-institutionalized civilians become more sedentary, experience more sedentary bouts of relatively long duration, with the longest sedentary bouts getting a higher weight in total sedentary time.
