Review of Christopher A. Porter, Johannine Social Identity Formation After the Fall of the Jerusalem Temple: Negotiating Identity in Crisis (BIS 194), Brill, 2022

Résumé

Christopher A. Porter’s Johannine Social Identity Formation After the Fall of the Jerusalem Temple: Negotiating Identity in Crisis applies Social Identity Theory (SIT) and the Structured Analysis of Group Arguments (SAGA) to examine the identity formation of the Johannine community. Porter argues that the Gospel of John, as an intra-Jewish text, responds to the crisis of the Temple’s destruction by redefining Jesus’ followers within the broader Jewish framework. Through SIT, he explores in-group/out-group dynamics, narrative identity, and group cohesion. This study provides a fresh socio-scientific approach to the Johannine writings, highlighting their role in shaping early Christian identity.
