Transfer of manor estates, big farms and smallholdings in the Vendee Bocage. The case of Saint-Hilaire-de-Loulay.
The transfer of land ownership is dealt with by comparing the owner and tenant groups whose strategies complement each other more than they oppose one another in this Vendee Bocage dominated for a long time by the large land ownership. We examine in particular the case of farmers who combine, in an original way, land ownership and renting; equality and inequality; solidarity of the family community and continuity of lineage. Their understanding, like that of the whole local system, requires a different view about the question of ownership and heritage which does not only concern material possession, but also status and the farm's capital.
